Starlink Launches Nationwide Satellite Texting Service in New Zealand

SpaceX’s satellite-to-cell Starlink service has reached a significant milestone by providing nationwide coverage in New Zealand, although with some limitations. One NZ, the first telecommunications company globally to power a nationwide satellite text messaging service via Starlink, has announced this achievement.

Global Partnerships and Expansion Plans

Starlink has partnered with various companies across the globe, including T-Mobile in the US, to expand its reach and provide seamless communication services. The list of partners includes Canada, Australia, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile, demonstrating Starlink’s growing presence worldwide.

One NZ has expressed its commitment to expanding the service to more devices next year, with the current support limited to four phone models: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and OPPO Find X8 Pro. This initial rollout is expected to increase in speed as the technology advances.

Initial Service Limitations

During the initial rollout, most text messages can be sent and received within three minutes, according to One NZ. However, this may take longer during the first few months, potentially reaching 10 minutes or more. One NZ’s Experience and Commercial Director, Joe Goddard, emphasized that the service will continue to improve over time.

"We continue to test the capabilities of One NZ Satellite TXT, and this is an initial service that will get better. For example, text messages will take longer to send but will get quicker over time," said Goddard. "We’re beginning with a small number of phones as part of the staggered rollout of the technology."

Future Developments and Pricing

The One NZ Satellite TXT service is currently free for existing customers on paid-monthly plans, although it’s unclear if new customers or those on other contracts will be required to pay an additional fee. The company hasn’t revealed any information regarding pricing for satellite-to-cell coverage.

In the future, voice calling and data services are expected to become available through Starlink, enhancing the overall user experience. One NZ’s commitment to expanding its services is a testament to the growing importance of satellite-based communication in remote areas.

Pilot Program with T-Mobile

Starlink previously piloted its text-by-satellite service with T-Mobile customers affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in October. The pilot program was successful, paving the way for FCC approval in November. T-Mobile is now signing up customers to test the US Starlink beta program "early next year."

The widespread adoption of satellite-to-cell services, such as One NZ’s Satellite TXT, has significant implications for global communication networks. With its growing presence worldwide and expanding partnerships, SpaceX’s Starlink service is poised to revolutionize the way we communicate in remote areas.
