Pierre Poilievre Makes Energy Pitch to President Donald Trump in Great Deal Offer

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, has made an energy pitch to former US President Donald Trump in an effort to address concerns about their trade relationship. In a series of statements, Poilievre outlined his vision for a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement between Canada and the United States.

The Discount on Canadian Energy

According to Poilievre, the discount on Canadian energy that is sold to the US market exists because Canada has few alternatives. There’s only one oil-export pipeline that goes to an ocean port in British Columbia, and the country is only now developing a liquefied natural gas industry with the capacity to ship large quantities of gas to Asia.

"So most of the fuel goes south," Poilievre said. "That is the true story — it’s the pathetic story — of our trade surplus, is that we’re actually handing over our resources, stupidly."

The Benefits of a Balanced Trade Agreement

Poilievre argued that a more balanced trade agreement between Canada and the US would have benefits for both countries. He noted that the US has reason to be annoyed with its deficits with China and Mexico because they siphon away American jobs.

"But the trade gap with Canada is different," Poilievre said. "It’s driven by the sale of commodities that Canada has and the U.S. needs, and actually supports American jobs where they’re processed downstream."

The Keystone Pipeline

Poilievre also suggested reviving the Keystone pipeline project, which was canceled by President Biden in 2021. He argued that this would allow Canadian energy to flow more easily into the US market.

"The last thing he should want to do is to block the underpriced Canadian energy from going into his marketplace," Poilievre said. "In fact, what I would encourage him to do is to approve the Keystone pipeline."

Addressing US Concerns

Poilievre also addressed concerns about border trafficking and military spending. He noted that a Conservative government would invest in Arctic security, as well as address US concerns about border trafficking.

"I can fund a more robust military and continental defence if I have more free trade with the greatest economy the world has ever seen — and we can both win," Poilievre said.

Conclusion

Poilievre’s energy pitch to Trump is an effort to address concerns about their trade relationship. By highlighting the benefits of a balanced trade agreement, reviving the Keystone pipeline project, and addressing US concerns, Poilievre is seeking to create a more mutually beneficial relationship between Canada and the US.
